Great Dismal Swamp
Outdoor adventures abound in the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge! It covers more than 112,000 acres of pristine forested wetlands and is home to Lake Drummond, the second largest natural lake in Virginia. This foreboding paradise has inspired writers and outdoor enthusiasts alike and is a must see for any Chesapeake visitor! The Great Dismal Swamp offers miles of hiking (and biking) trails. Visitors can observe natural swamp conditions along the Dismal Town Boardwalk Trail, a mile long elevated wooden walkway over the swamp, or try the 4.5 mile Washington Ditch Trail to Lake Drummond. Boating is permitted year round on Lake Drummond. The 3,100 acre natural lake is located at the heart of the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge. Visitors can canoe, kayak or boat on the lake. There are many entrances to the Great Dismal Swamp. Be sure to find out what entrance you need before traveling.
