Chesapeake's Corey Law makes the Globetrotters

Cue "Sweet Georgia Brown." Inflate the red, white and blue basketballs. Fill the water buckets with confetti.

Corey Law is a Harlem Globetrotter, one of four new members of the iconic troupe known globally as the clown princes of basketball.

The former Deep Creek and High Point University standout has a new contract and a freshly-coined nickname - "Thunder" - which he comes by naturally.

"I got it for my thunderous dunks," Law said Wednesday.

It was that dunking ability, powered by a 44-inch vertical leap, that got Law invited to the 2013 College Slam Dunk Championship and caught the eye of the Globetrotters.

Law, 23, was drafted in June and auditioned at a one-day camp in Atlantic City. He was offered a spot on the team just prior to training camp, which concluded last week in Long Island.

"It was definitely a dream come true," he said. "Coming up, who doesn't know the world famous Harlem Globetrotters?"

Not many, it would seem. Entering their 88th season, the Globetrotters have played in 122 countries on six continents and have entertained popes, kings, queens and presidents - as well as hundreds of millions of fans.

The 6-foot-4 Law is scheduled to make his debut in late December at the beginning of the North American leg of the 2014 "Fans Rule" tour. That is subject to change, however. The Globetrotters have an overseas tour prior to that. The organization keeps 30 players under contract at any given time and divides them into three teams "of equal showmanship and talent" said Scott Johnson, the director of public relations. The teams play about 400 games per year.

Speaking of showmanship, Law said the players aren't coached on how to act. They're expected to be themselves. Naturally outgoing, Law's personality also played a part in his selection, he said.

"I do a good job of putting smiles on kid's faces," he said. "And that's something the Globetrotters have been doing for a very long time."
