Big NFL catch for Beach's Hunter
Big NFL catch for Beach's Hunter

Virginia Beach’s Justin Hunter picked a good time for his first NFL reception. The former Ocean Lakes High standout snagged a 34-yard touchdown pass with 15 seconds left to lift the Tennessee Titans to a 20-17 victory over the San Diego Chargers.

He wasn’t the only player from South Hampton Roads to make an impact on Sunday:

Hunter told Titans Online that the phrase “attack the ball” was his first thought as he saw it coming toward him. That’s what receivers coach Shawn Jefferson has stressed since the rookie joined the Titans as a first-round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft.

“That’s why he’s here,” Titans offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains said. “He’s got great speed and great size. I wish he had two touchdowns today.”

Loggains was referring to a second-quarter pass to Hunter that was broken up. Tennessee quarterback Jake Locker told Titans Online that the lessons learned from that play helped Hunter make the game-winning catch.

Loggains also said that Hunter has made great strides in the past three weeks. “He’s starting to come into his own, and he’s starting to believe,” Loggains said.

On a final note, as the Chargers tried in desperation to score as the clock ran out, San Diego quarterback Philip Rivers instinctively went into soccer mode. That's a penalty, so even if the Chargers have scored, it wouldn't have counted.
