AAU Junior Olympics in Hampton Roads in 2020, '25

The AAU Junior Olympics, already scheduled to be held in Hampton Roads in 2015, will also be returning in 2020 and 2025, the Hampton Roads Sports Commission announced Tuesday.

When the Games were last here in 2010, they brought 14,733 athletes and their families, plus 2,329 coaches from around the nation. According to the commission, $40 million in spending was generated in the region.

The AAU decided last week to bring Games back.

“It is great news for the region,” Morgan Lang, executive director of the sports commission said in a statement. “It brings visitors to the area, enhances tourism and has a significant economic impact to our localities.”

Five cities will be a part of hosting events: Chesapeake, Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Hampton and Newport News.
