The Can-Am Police-Fire Games are coming to Hampton Roads in 2018.

The Olympic-style event will feature more than 2,000 emergency first-responders and military competitors during a week of events at venues around Hampton Roads, according to a news release from the Hampton Roads Sports Commission.

More than 40 sporting events will be held in Chesapeake, Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk and Virginia Beach and will range from swimming and softball to cycling. Profession-specific events such as SWAT, toughest firefighter alive and pistol also will be included.

The commission is an affiliate of the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce.

The games, held since 1977, have showcased law enforcement and fire service workers across the country. The games also allow spouses of eligible agencies to compete, the release says.

The games, held every two years, will be in York, Pa., in 2014, and in Thunder Bay, Ontario, in 2016, according to the Can-Am website.

A portion of the proceeds from the games will be donated to Vigilant Watch, a nonprofit organization  that provides help to public safety officials and their families.
