IFLY VIRGINIA BEACH IS HOSTING THE THIRD US NATIONAL INDOOR SKYDIVING CHAMPIONSHIP JANUARY 11TH-13TH, 2019
IFLY VIRGINIA BEACH IS HOSTING THE THIRD US NATIONAL INDOOR SKYDIVING CHAMPIONSHIP JANUARY 11TH-13TH, 2019

The sport of indoor skydiving has seen tremendous growth as there are now 35 facilities across the US and over 80 wind tunnels internationally that contribute to the growth of the sport. Children as young as 13 can compete internationally. Competitors fly timed routines with compulsory maneuvers in individual, two-way, and four-way teams. There is also a freestyle category that is a huge crowd pleaser.

The January 2019 event will be the third annual US Championship resulting in the selection of the 25-member US team who will compete at the World Air Sport Federation’s World Championship in Lille, France in April of this year. The 2018 World Championship was held in Bahrain in October 2018 and was supported by the Bahrain Air Sport Federation. Participating countries included Canada, The US, China, Singapore, Australia, Italy, France, and several other Eastern and Western European nations. Over 200 athletes from 20 countries competed.

This will be the third year in a row that iFLY Va Beach hosts the US National Championship. Last May 115 athletes and their support teams representing 3 countries converged on Va Beach for the 3-day event. The event generates about 400 room nights at resort area hotels.

“Hosting the US National Championship is significant for the city, the region, and the sport of indoor skydiving,” iFLY Virginia Beach CEO Robert Pizzini said. The feedback from last year’s event was very positive in that the iFLY Va Beach team ran a very professional competition, the visitors enjoyed other attractions throughout the area, and our sports/video production was the best to date and viewed worldwide.

At iFLY Virginia Beach, four 350-horsepower fans generate wind speeds up to 160 mph inside a 52-foot-tall, 14-foot-diameter glass flight chamber. The NASA-designed technology provides an environment that simulates free-fall conditions. iFLY Virginia Beach is a locally owned and operated franchise and one of 35 iFLY locations across the country.

Spectators are welcome free of charge and flight packages will be available at discounted rates. More than 120,000 people have flown at iFLY Va Beach since opening at the Oceanfront in January 2015.
