The Virginia Sports Hall of Fame & Museum presented four individuals for its 8th Annual Student Athlete Achievement Awards
PORTSMOUTH, VA – The Virginia Sports Hall of Fame & Museum held their 8th annual Student Athlete Achievement Awards banquet on December 2. This event honors some of the state’s great student athletes both at the middle and high school levels. The four awards categories were: girls in 6th through 8th grade, girls in 9th through 12th grade, boys in 6th through 8th grade and boys in 9th through 12th grade. The award winners were Jada Crittendon, an eighth grader at the Academy of International Studies at Rosemont in Norfolk, John Eberle, a seventh grader at Benton Middle School in Manassas, Elizabeth “Betsy” Wusk, a senior at Tabb High School in Yorktown and Jordan Sergent, a senior at Atlantic Shores Christian Academy in Chesapeake.
“These kids are extremely accomplished individuals who are dedicated not only to their sport, but also their school and community,” notes president Eddie Webb. “We could not have asked for a better well-rounded group to select this year’s winners from.”
Students from across Virginia in grades 6th through 12th were eligible. Virginia Sports Hall of Fame inductees Kenny Easley and Johnny Newman were also present. The winners will also be honored with an exhibit in the museum’s rotating exhibit “Virginians in the Spotlight” during the months of January and February 2013. This event was made possible through funding of our generous sponsors: Cox Communications, Wheelabrator Technologies Inc., Reisbeck Contracting and the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame & Museum’s Education Foundation.
ABOUT THE WINNERS:
The two middle school winners, Jada Crittendon and John Eberle have numerous achievements. Jada achieved straight A’s throughout middle school, is a member of the National Junior Honor Society, and has been named MVP of her softball team, the ASA Virginia Legends Association. John has also achieved straight A’s as well as being the top scorer on Benton Middle School’s soccer team; he is also a well-rounded athlete playing basketball for the JV team at the school. Giving back to the community is another accomplishment of John’s where he participates in an outreach program for special needs kids and won TOPSoccer’s “Buddy of the Year” award.
Students in the high school category were especially strong this year, and Betsy Wusk, a Tabb High School senior edged others to win the high school girls category. Betsy is the captain of the Tabb High field hockey team, and broke the national record with 27 consecutive shutouts as a sweeper/defender. Not only is she a captain on her high school team, but she was also selected for the Junior Olympic Field Hockey team, and she was also a finalist in Wendy’s High School Heisman. Betsy excels not only on the field, but also in the classroom where she maintains a 4.33 GPA and is also president of Tabb’s Rachel’s Challenge Clun and a student ambassador for the school. She
aspires to be an engineer and has done both a mentorship and internship at NASA Langley Research Center.
Jordan Sergent, a senior at Atlantic Shores Christian Academy won the high school boys category. Jordan excels particularly well on the baseball diamond where he plays varsity baseball for Atlantic Shores, but also multiple travel teams. Among his nationwide baseball accomplishments include being named an Under Armour Pre-season All American, a Perfect Game All-American honorable mention, and a 2012 USA Tournament of Stars gold medal winner. Statewide accomplishments include Metro Conference player of the year, 1st team all -state, and the 2012 MaxPreps leader in homeruns, RBI and runs. Jordan’s academic accomplishments include having a 3.95 GPA, being a member of the National Honor Society, and being the high school chaplain.
