VIRGINIA BEACH

After three days of nothing but surfing, it's time to get the party started.

Today marks the beginning of the rest of the annual "end-of-the summer" beach party known as the Coastal Edge East Coast Surfing Championships.

Several surf-skate scene sports are on tap for the remainder of the ECSC, which concludes Sunday at the southern end of the Virginia Beach resort strip. Among the favorites are half-pipe skateboarding and BMX trick-course bike riding.

One of the oldest events, aside from surfing, is the skimboard competition.

And while volleyball has been part of the mix for decades, the sport reaches new heights starting with today's Dream in Gold beach volleyball clinic featuring three-time Olympic gold medalist Misty May-Treanor. There also will be a men's and women's two-person tournament with $10,000 in prize money.

There will be a beach flag football championship tournament as well.

And throughout it all, there is the party scene with live music, food, drinks, plenty of surf-skate culture vendors and thousands of people.

Of course, the heart of the ECSC still is the surfing. And the swell has been surprisingly good considering what conditions were like before last weekend. Competition in both professional and amateur divisions continues today, with professional finals set for Sunday. Final heat times will depend on the surf, which is predicted to rise back to the quality of Monday.
