Admirals win in shootout to stay tied for playoff spot

After victories Sunday, the Norfolk Admirals and Hershey Bears head into their two-game series this week tied for the eighth and final playoff spot in the AHL's Eastern Conference.

Jesse Blacker scored the only shootout goal in the sixth round of the Admirals' 3-2 victory over the Portland Pirates at the Cumberland County Civic Center. Trailing 2-1, Portland scored with six seconds to play in regulation, forcing overtime.

Emerson Etem and Nic Kerdiles scored regulation goals for Norfolk. Goaltender Brad Thiessen stopped 32 regulation shots and all six shootout attempts.

Later, Hershey defeated Binghamton 1-0 in overtime.

Norfolk and Hershey, each with 86 points, meet Wednesday and Friday nights at Scope. They close the regular season Saturday night: the Admirals at Binghamton and the Bears host Adirondack.

Albany and Providence, owners of the sixth and seventh playoff spots, are tied at 89 points. Each has two games remaining.
